Morpheus Cloud & Data in Multi-Cloud Management
I spent some time out in California with several tech/cloud/awesome companies for Cloud Field Day 6 (as well as with some amazing cloud delegates!) and I’ve been meaning to write about some of the really cool stuff that I saw out there. So with that, I want to tell you about Morpheus Data.
The Problem
Your business is growing into the cloud. The Dev team wants to use AWS because all the cool kids are doing it (ok, that’s not the real reason, but for brevity we’re going to go with that). Not only that, but they have tool sprawl, poor app lifecycle management, and they have to talk to those jerks in IT when they want resources.
The business folks are getting wooed by Microsoft EA agreements and are thinking that Azure is the best solution because money (again, not a real reason but you see where I’m going).
The Ops team has been using VMware for years and it’s been working just nicely thank you very much and this cloud thing is a passing fad that’s going to blow over any day now…
Management has been hearing more about DevOps and decided that (no, it doesn’t mean we can hire 1 person that does the job of both sides) they need to find something that can:
- Help the Ops team get a handle on all of the disparate environments
- Allow the Dev team to integrate their existing tooling into said solution without massive retraining/rearchitecting
- Give the folks who need it a self-service portal so they can be empowered to create without restriction*
- Make the business folks happy from a compliance and visibility perspective.
The Solution
I found that one of the *coolest* things about Morpheus is that you don’t have to toss out your existing provisioning/integration/pipeline solutions in order to get the most out of it. They’ve put a lot of work into making sure that it will work in brownfield and greenfield environments.
It is designed specifically to work with over 75 existing platforms. These aren’t web hooks, these are managed 3rd party integrations. How? By using agile development internally to release new features every few weeks:
I’ve heard of a few of these names:
Use Cases
Migrations: If you’ve been to one of my AWS talks, then you’ve probably heard of the 6 Rs of migration. There are a *ton* of tools out there that can be leveraged in these efforts. The Morpheus platform can either assist your existing tooling efforts or be the 1st tool in your tool belt:
Management: Standardize infrastructure management across ~20 platforms.
Automated Provisioning: Hook into and leverage existing infrastructure and tooling to create self-service portals for different types of users:
The Morpheus CFD Presentations:
Based upon what I saw during the demo presentations, I’m recommending that my organization look into using Morpheus. Take it out for a spin and let me know if it meets/exceeds your expectations. I see a lot of customer architectures that would benefit from it; let me know what you think!
